What children need

Research has shown that the
first six years of a person's life,
will strongly influence the rest of their life.

Before a baby is born, the mother can begin to form a relationship with that child, through stroking her stomach and talking and singing to the baby. From the moment of birth that baby needs to be able to trust its parent(s) to provide the basic needs for survival. As the baby is held in the parent's arms, eye contact needs to be established, with the baby seeing the reflection of joy and delight on his/her parent's face. Over the weeks, the baby comes to learn that it is loved, valued and cared for. This is the baby's first experience of relationship, and where this little person first learns if he/she is worthwhile.

The way an infant or toddler is treated will teach them that they are important, or a nuisance to those around them. Also they are watching the adults in their life and learning how to be a grown up young man or woman from them.

Parents that have had a difficult upbringing themselves, will find it hard to treat their own children any differently.

Building Families for Life helps parents to increase the bond with their children, no matter what age the children are; and break generational parenting habits that could have a negative impact on their own children.
